Jamestown Canyon Virus Found In Westport In New CT Mosquito Collection

The number of mosquitoes collected the week of July 1 also spiked, up to 16, 485 from the week of June 24 when 13, 786 mosquitoes were collected, according to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station is the state agency responsible for trapping, identifying, and testing mosquitoes for encephalitis viruses.

The previous collection had just one instance of Jamestown Canyon, while seven mosquitoes were found with the virus in the current collection, according to the latest report 

Jamestown Canyon is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause fever and meningitis, mostly in adults.

One of the Jamestown Canyon mosquitoes was found in Fairfield County at Sherwood Island in Westport. The other six mosquitoes were found in North Stonington and West Haven, where five mosquitoes tested positive for the virus. 

The West Haven mosquito collection is substantially higher than the other areas. The West Haven collection was 3,490 while only 124 mosquitoes were collected at Sherwood Island.

In Fairfield County, mosquitoes in the program are collected in Bethel, Bridgeport Danbury, Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, New Canaan, Newtown, Norwalk, Redding, Ridgefield, Shelton, Stamford, Weston, Westport and Wilton
